“Remember, remember the fifth of November.” So ran the old rhyme. I have vivid memories of being approached by young lads (and sometimes girls), with the request, “Penny for the guy, please Mister.” Sometimes they would even knock on our door, accompanied by the guy, I imagine for evidence.

If I was working in the garage, passing children would often ask if I had any “spare wood”, and I would dig out some pieces that were surplus to requirements.

Of course, November is also the time when we remember those who have served in the military over the years, and those who belong to them.

The Bible too, calls us to remember. In Deuteronomy 8 v 2, we read

“You shall remember the whole way the Lord led you.”

Notice the word “whole”. God was in it for the long haul. In the context of the chapter, it was a test for them, but a guarantee for those who believed.

Psalm 105 v 8 reads, “He remembers His covenant for ever, the word He commanded for a thousand generations.”

C.H. Spurgeon was on a night-time journey in a cab, going uphill. A single light appeared ahead. Then another. And another. A lamplighter, invisible in the gloom, was lighting the streetlamps to the top of the hill.

An old hymn runs “All the way my Saviour leads me.”

He remembers us. It’s only right that we remember Him.
