MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE?

Have you ever seen the optical illusion that’s either a vase or two faces looking at each other? Or perhaps you’ve tried one of those “Magic Eye” pictures that just seems to be a crazy meaningless image, but when you look at it for a while in a certain way, something clicks within your brain and you suddenly see it as the artist intended – an amazing 3D object or scene right in front of your eyes! It’s all about perception.
The Bible speaks about a similar thing. The apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians says,
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (Corinthians 1 verse 18).
When presented with the message about Jesus dying on a cross for them, some people only see foolishness – like it’s a crazy picture that makes no sense. But other people see something very different: a wonderful picture of a powerful God who loves them and gave His Son to save them.
Like the picture that could be a vase or two faces looking at each other, some people see nothing out of the ordinary in Jesus, but others, when they look a little more deeply, suddenly find themselves face to face with God.
And, just like the wonderful world and universe in which we live, those seemingly random “3D pictures”, with just the briefest attention, can be seen to have a definite pattern, even if we can’t immediately see what’s hidden within it. The trick is of course, to get close and look beyond the picture. Then the true perspective appears.
