Matthew 26:1-16. JUDAS BETRAYS JESUS FOR 30 PIECES OF SILVER
Short-Term vs Long-Term?
At this point in the Easter account we see two very different people: one who made a short-term sacrifice and gained a lasting legacy, and one who made a short-term gain that cost him everything in the long run.
The former – the woman (Mark’s gospel names her as Mary) who poured out her expensive perfume on Jesus – has gone down in history as a person of great love, great humility, great generosity and great perceptiveness.
By contrast the character of Judas has become synonymous with betrayal and greed – the man who handed Jesus over for thirty pieces of silver. But if we're honest, there’s a little bit of Judas in all of us.
Jesus once said, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?”
It’s a rhetorical question, a no brainer. And yet, how often do we take the short-term gain without regard for the long-term cost?
Jesus – and, in a bizarre way, Judas – challenge us to see the big picture and make choices that we will come to recognise as small, short-term sacrifices in order to gain a far greater and lasting reward.
